ISLAMABAD: After establishing contacts with leaders of opposition parties, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah on Friday convened a meeting with parliamentary opposition leaders to cook up a joint strategy pertaining to the demand for resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the wake of Panama Papers probe’s damning report.

Headed by the opposition leader, Khursheed Shah, the opposition parliamentary leaders’ meeting is underway at the chamber of opposition leader in the National Assembly. The meeting is being attended by leaders from PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-P (MQM-P), and Awami National Party (ANP).

Earlier, Shah held one to one meetings with leaders of opposition parties including Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief Sheikh Rasheed, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Besides AML chief Sheikh Rasheed, Qaumi Watan Party’s president Aftab Sherpao has also been extended invitation for his participation in the meeting.

On Thursday, Shah affirmed PPP would not play a friendly role anymore and asserted that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has lost moral legitimacy to hold his office in the wake of Panamagate JIT report.

The opposition leader was addressing a press conference when he said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should immediately resign in the wake of revelations made by the Panamagate probing team.

“The premier’s reputation was tainted just after emergence of the Panamagate scandal. He should have tendered resignation when the investigation started against him as he lacked moral jurisdiction to continue his office [being investigated for money laundering]. Now the situation is different,” Shah asserted while implying that PM must resign.

He dispelled a view that the PPP is trying to harm democracy while stating that his party wants to strengthen the state institutions by raising its concerns on a corrupt PM as what he said the premier should be indicted on forgery charges for record tampering.

Previously, he held meetings with Sheikh Rasheed and Shah Mehmood Qureshi in which the opposition leaders agreed to submit a requisition in the national assembly secretariat to summon a lower house session to debate on the matter.

Political analysts believe the recent contact among opposition leaders is indicative of PM’s resignation demand gaining momentum.
