The 62nd death anniversary of Urdu’s renowned writer Saadat Hasan Manto is being observed today.

Saadat Hasan Manto was born on 11 May, 1912, in Simla, in British India . He passed away at the young age of 43 years and left a legacy which remains unmatched till this day.

His unique writing style and rebellious nature made him famous. He usually wrote short stories and modern fiction, which earned him large number of fans.

Some of his works include Thanda Gosht, Sarkandon Ke Peechay, Sarak Kay Kinaray, Beghair Ijazat, Shikari Auratain and Phunduney.

Manto’s work was influential and he wrote on issues which were considered taboo by the people of the sub-continent at that time. Manto had to face court cases due to his writings.

However, the courts never found substantial evidence over the charges to convict him.

One of Manto’s quote states, “If you find my stories dirty, the society you are living in is dirty. With my stories, I only expose the truth”.

He spent his last years in Lahore. Excessive drinking had a devastating impact on his liver and he died on January 18, 1955.
