1: Zardari terms Gen Sharif’s decision on extension ‘premature’.
KARACHI: Former president Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday said the announcement not to take extension in service by General Raheel Sharif was ‘premature’, despite the fact that he hailed the same decision nearly a month ago.
But, today’s statement by the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stunned political circles after 28 days of his earlier assertion.
“As the country is through a sensitive phase, PPP considers Gen Sharif’s decision premature,” Zardari said in a statement. “The decision can transform people’s hopes into disappointment, while it may also give a negative perception.”
He went on to say that it is not adequate to search for military’s role in political affairs, accountability and other matters, suggesting nation and media not to spread such speculations.
2: PPP denies Zardari statement on army chief’s extension.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has denied the issuance of any statement by co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
Talking to media at Islamabad Press Club, Qamar Zaman Kaira said the party is inquiring as to who issued the statement on army chief’s decision of not taking extension attributing it to Asif Ali Zardari.
However, party leader Nafeesa Shah denying any such development said that the former president issued no statement yesterday and termed it mismanagement on certain level within the party.
“Peoples Party backs military offensives,” she said reminding that the operation in Swat was launched in the tenure of former PPP-govt.
“However, co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari cannot issue such a statement pertaining to the extension in service of the army chief.”
She added that the party is trying to identify as to by whom and at which level this mismanagement took place.
